The Facts About Arthritis – What to Expect

Arthritis & the General Population

Over 50 million adults have been diagnosed with some form of arthritis. There are more than 100 different types.  In fact it is the leading cause of disability in the United States. It can be found in all races, ages and both genders.  However, studies do show that the disease is most common in women and older adults.

Common Symptoms

The most common symptoms include stiffness, pain, inflammation and decreased range of motion. These symptoms often come and go, and have a tendency to be mild or severe.  Many forms of arthritis display progressive symptoms.  Over time it can be the cause of permanent joint changes, chronic pain and create the inability to complete daily activities.  A person may also notice changes in vision, skin, lungs and heart.

What Can Be Done?

Although there is no cure, symptoms can be managed. Focusing on the preservation of joint function and mobility will make a huge difference in the long run.  Being educated about the disease and figuring out what works best for your body is vital.  Finally, making time for physical activity and maintaining a healthy weight are also important when living with arthritis.
